A 26-year-old youngster, Sharath Koppu, who hails from Warangal and was a student with the University of Missouri, was shot dead in a shooting inside a restaurant in Kansas on Friday.

According to his relatives here, they had received news this morning that Sharath was wounded in a shooting. However, they did not have further details, following which they have been dashing off requests and tweets to various quarters, from External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao, asking for help and information.

They have also quoted reports in local media in Kansas saying that Sharath was fatally wounded and that the reports suggested he was killed in the incident. According to a report in the Kansas City Star, local police got information about a shooting in J’s Fish and Chicken Market around 7pm on Friday, with the victim being in his 20s or 30s. Capt. Lionel Colón with the Kansas City police said it was unclear how the shooter or shooters left the scene. The police have asked witnesses to call the homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or by anonymously submitting a tip at 816-474-8477.

The report said Kansas City fire personnel arrived and transported Sharath to a hospital, where he died. Two witnesses, who were inside a nearby motel, said they heard five gunshots coming from the direction of the restaurant. By the time they made it outside, the suspect had fled.

Sharath’s father K. Ram Mohan, a BSNL employee in Hyderabad, told Telangana Today that Sharath had moved to the US a few years back after doing his engineering from Vasavi Engineering College, Hyderabad, and that he was also working part-time in a restaurant there.

“According to the information we received, miscreants entered the restaurant and started shooting. Two of my son’s friends escaped the bullets. My son tried to run away and they shot him from behind. He was taken to a hospital and the hospital authorities are not disclosing any information. Through news channels we are hearing the updates, some say he is fatally wounded, some say he is dead,” he said.
