First ever LATA Mini Olympics starts with a bang

The biggest sporting event among NRI Telugu Community, LATA Mini Olympics started in Los Angeles on Saturday May 26th. As part of the Mini Olympics 8 sports tournaments are conducted simultaneously (Cricket, Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming, Tennikoit (Ring ball), 100m running, Chess and Carroms). Santa Clarita city Mayor, Laurene Weste was the chief guest during the Opening Ceremony, and she inaugurated the games by tossing the coin for cricket. On the opening day of the Mini Olympics, 10 cricket teams fought in the first round of prelims for the spots in the finals. Cricket prelims will continue here at Santa Clarita on May 27th, and again on June 24th in Buena Park.

Many participants said this is the first ever sporting event by NRI Telugu organization at this scale. Games like Tennikoit, Chess, 100m running, Tennis and swimming are specially designed keeping women and children in mind. About 500 players already registered for the games, and the rest of the spots are filling up fast. Organizers encouraged everyone to register in advance in this historic event.

LATA Board of Director Narendra Kavarthapu, along with Kiran Gururaj, Phani Pannapali and other volunteers played a key role in putting together the Opening Ceremony and the Cricket prelims in Santa Clarita. LATA President Hari Madala conveyed special thanks to volunteers, players, members, guests and sponsors for the successful opening day. Treasurer Surya Damodara and Board members Vijay Bhaskar Nekkanti, Suresh Ambati and Krishna Rao Allaparti also took part in the Opening Ceremony.
